«How was the traffic?» carries no information anyone needs. It carries something else: a test of whether we are on speaking terms, and an offer to be. That is the whole point, and it is not a small one.
Speech that exists to open a channel
The anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski described a kind of talk in which the words matter far less than the fact of speaking: greetings, remarks about the weather, questions whose answers nobody records. He called it phatic communion, and it exists in every language studied since.
Judged as information transfer, it is a failure. Judged as what it is — an offer of contact and a check that the offer is accepted — it is efficient. The weather is chosen precisely because it is safe, shared and unimportant.
Why people who hate it usually hate the wrong thing
Most people who say they dislike small talk actually dislike being stuck in it. The complaint is not about the first two minutes but about the twentieth, when nothing has moved and both of you are still performing pleasantness.
That is a navigation problem, not a moral one. Small talk is a corridor. It works if you walk through it; it is unbearable if you stand in it.
Getting out of the corridor
The move is to answer the question and add one specific hook — something particular enough to be asked about. «Fine, though I've been trying to fix a bike all weekend» costs one clause and hands the other person a door.
And take the doors you are handed. Most conversations that stay shallow do so because both people kept returning safe answers, each waiting for the other to risk something first.
The two questions that beat «what do you do»
«What have you been up to lately?» works better than a job question because it does not sort people by status and it accepts any answer — a project, a holiday, a bad week.
The second is simply asking about the thing in front of you: how they know the host, what brought them to this town, whether the food is any good. Present-tense questions are easier to answer than biographical ones, and they cannot fail on someone whose life is currently complicated.
When there is genuinely nothing to say
Silence between two people who have already made contact is not a failure. The phatic work has been done; you are allowed to stop. Filling every gap is what makes small talk exhausting, not the small talk itself.
And ending it is a skill of its own. «I'm going to get a drink — good to see you» is warmer than drifting away mid-sentence, and it leaves the channel open for next time, which was the point from the beginning.
One hundred ways to look at yourself
Reading about it is one thing. Ten of the tests are open right here — no install, no account, nothing saved.
